Twin tragedies struck Mizoram when a landslide and a bus mishap claimed as many as 19 lives in two separate incidents.
Tragedy struck when landslide caved in on an RCC building housing two families. The incident happened in Lunglei where the building collapsed due to landslide killing ten people including a four year old child. The building was freshly constructed structure.
According to survivors, the incident happened at about 6:30 pm yesterday. A loud crash was heard after which the house collapsed. The rescue missions turned out to be difficult due to the breakdown of power supply and the incessant rains that continued.
The local MLA visited the site and gave a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the survivors. Lunglei DC Ankita Chakravarty was also present at the site.
Meanwhile, in a tragic incident, at least nine people were killed and 21 injured near Pangzawl, when a bus travelling to Lunglei skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge.
The injured persons were taken to a nearby hospital and to a Primary Health Center of Serchhip in Pangzawl and Hnahthial.
According to reports, around 33 passengers were travelling in the bus. Search and rescue operations are still on to rescue the remaining passengers. Meanwhile, the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
