Uncountable numbers of tear gas shells ripped through the silence of Shillong night as police tried to bring the riot like situation under control. The police also had to resort to the use of water cannons as the unruly mob pelted stones at the police.

The situation flared up in the evening after an altercation took place between one of the STPTS driver and a resident of the Mothpran locality. Later during the day, a huge crowd, suspected to be instigated reached the locality to confront the resident.
