Foreign Tourists may soon be allowed to visit some of the most pristine locations of the northeastern state of Sikkim which was kept out of bound so far without special permit.
Sikkim has certain entry restrictions due to its proximity to neighbouring countries like China. Hence, all foreigners are required to avail Restricted Area Permit to visit any part of the state. The Union Home Ministry has now proposed lifting restrictions on foreigners travelling to Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
Union Tourism Minister KJ Alphons said that the ministry is examining whether to relax the six decade old Restricted Area Permit regime, under which foreigners must obtain a special permission to visit Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir.
He also added that a change in the law would be subject to the approval of the ministries and the states are to be consulted prior making any decision.
