Alliance partner of the BJP in Assam, the Asom Gana Parishad continues its firm stand opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016.

After the party openly opposed the Bill in the recently concluded third NEDA conclave, a two member AGP delegation met BJP national President Amit Shah at the national capital today to voice concerns over the Bill.

AGP president Atul Bora and AGP leader Keshab Mahanta met the BJP president reiterating the party’s opposition to the Bill that provides citizenship to migrants from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan facing alleged religious persecution.

It may be mentioned that Assam and the region is witnessing massive protest after the Joint Parliamentary Committee conducted hearing in Guwahati, Silchar and Shillong earlier this month where political parties besides several other socio-cultural organisations had filed representations opposing the Bill.

However, a number of organisations had filed representations supporting the Bill in the Barak valley of Assam.
