The lone BJP member in the Meghalaya cabinet AL Hek has opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill stating that such a move would open the floodgates for illegal migrants.
Hek stated that his view on the bill was nit different from the cabinet decision taken in the state opposing the bill.
Hek said passage of the bill can completely change the demography of Meghalaya. The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, which also has BJP in the coalition, has opposed the bill.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill recently visited Shillong amidst protest by various organisations and took views of the various stakeholders who unanimously said no to the amendment bill.
