After Assam, the Joint Parliamentary Committee is at Shillong in Meghalaya to conduct hearing into the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Sit-in demonstrations greeted members of the JPC headed by BJP Lok Sabha MP Rajendra Agarwal in Shillong. The JPC is scheduled to hold discussions with different stakeholders relating to various provisions of the proposed bill at the State Convention Centre today and tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Government led by NPP, which is an ally of the ruling BJP at the Centre has already opposed to the proposed Bill. The Meghalaya cabinet is of the opinion that the proposed legislation will not serve the purpose of people of the state.
The Khasi Students Union has reiterated its opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The students union say that implementation of the bill would jeopardize the demographics of Meghalaya as well as the northeastern region as well.
The Students Union along with a delegation including Northeast Students Organisation, the Naga Students Forum will meet the Joint Parliamentary committee in Shillong during the hearing and file their representation opposing the Bill to grant citizenship to religious minorities affected by persecution.
