The hearing for the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Barak valley of Assam concluded today.
A total of 315 organisations filed their representations before the parliamentary panel. A majority of the organisations filed representations in favour of granting citizenship to religious minorities.
Assam has shown clear signs of being divided over the Citizenship Amendment Bill with contrasting opinions on the subject in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys as the hearing of the joint parliamentary committee on the issue has ended in the state.
Political parties like the Congress too have emerged a completely divied house with as many as four ministers and two MLAs coming out in support of the bill by going against the party’s official line.
