Shocking visuals of a girl being “kidnapped” in Majuli district of Assam now clearly indicates that crimes against women in the state has gone out of control.
The visuals show three miscreants forcibly pulling a girl to a country boat and then crossing the river. Ironically, a few onlookers remained mute spectators to the incident even as the victim raised hue and cry desperately calling for help.
Fortunately, the miscreants after reaching the other side of the river were countered by a team of four village panchayat officials who were on an audit trail in the near deserted area.
Two women panchayat officials came for the rescue of the victim who soon contacted the Superintendent of Police and the local police station. Sensing trouble, the micreants fled the spot and the victim was finally rescued and handed over to police.
The police thanked Manaswi Phukan and Smriti Sikha Gayan for their act of bravery. However, the incident has once again exposed the weak enforcement of laws in dealing with crimes against women in the state.
