The Meghalaya Police has stepped up its fight against drug menace. East Khasi Hills SP, Davis Marak said, for the fight against menace of drug abuse to yield effective results, the source or kingpins have to be identified and the state police has in the last six months managed to arrest three key players.

Expressing concern over the fact that drug abuse is increasing in the state, Marak said that in the last 6 months, they have managed to arrest three big fishes acting on specific inputs, they are further conducting raids hoping to catch the main men.

Marak, however refused to divulge any more information about the arrest of the kingpin saying that the investigation is on and revealing their identity will hamper the process. Pointing out that drug abuse is a social problem, Marak said that the police have also appealed the student body KSU to cooperate with them in the fight against this menace.

Informing that whenever a drug smuggler or an addict is arrested, they are released in a span of a week or more, given the fact that they are legally entitled to send a plea seeking release to undergo treatment in rehabilitation centres and while some actually get enrolled in the rehab centre, for others, it is just a way out for them to repeat the same mistake.

He, however, stated that the effective tool to prevent such repetitions is to fully implement the preventive detention laws like the Prevention Of Illicit Traffic In Narcotic Drugs And Psychotropic Substances Act to provide for detention in certain cases for the purpose of preventing illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and for matters connected therewith.
