The State tourism sector in 2017-18 witnessed a 20% rise compared to the previous year with tourists from both within and outside the country flocking to the State. This was announced by Tourism and Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma while releasing the annual report of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.

The Corporation would produce the second promotional film featuring Priyanka Chopra, the brand ambassador of the Assam tourism department, announced Dr Sarma adding that the first film featuring the prominent star has drawn accolades from viewers across the globe.

Dr Sarma further informed that a ropeway from the foothills of the Kamakhya to the temple would be constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore. The Kamakhya project will have the trial run in December 2018 while the project is expected to become fully operational by February 2019.

The Minister also informed that the ropeway connecting North and South Guwahati would be  completed by year end or by the first half of 2019. He also made significant comments with reference to the rise in petrol and diesel prices.

If venture schools are to be provincialised then there would not be any way out but to impose additional taxes on petrol and diesel, the Minister added.
