Rongali or Bohag Bihu, which marks the Assamese lunar New Year, is a time of zest and joy among the people of Assam.

The first day of the Bihu, known as Goru bihu was celebrated with great pomp and fervor. This phase is related to the agricultural roots of Assam and the reverence of livestock.

On the last date of ‘saut mah’, the first day of Rongali Bihu is dedicated to the upkeep of livestock. Farmers wash, feed and worship their bulls and cows as a sign of respect and gratitude for the service provided by the cattle.

On this day, cattle shows are also organised across the state. After bathing the cattle in the rivers and ponds, pieces of lau-bengena etc. are fed to the cattle.

Meanwhile, thousands of Bihu organizing committees or the Bihu Sanmilans have planned various cultural events to celebrate the festival.

Considered as the festival of merriment, Rongali Bihu that marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year starts on the last day of the month of Chout according to the Hindu calendar.
