A desperate bid by the opposition Congress to corner the BJP-led Government in Assam has boomeranged badly.

State Congress president Ripun Bora thundered at a press conference in Guwahati that within two years of coming to power, the Sarbananda Sonowal Government has done an excess expenditure to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore.

However, the state Congress president’s charges fell flat after facts revealed by the Comptroller and Auditor General in one of its major reports reveal quite the contrary picture.

It says between 2002-2003 and 2015-16, the Assam Government has carried out an excess expenditure to the tune of Rs 10,004.29 crore. Moreover, the CAG report added, these excess expenditure had not been regularized.

The point to note here is that during the entire period that the CAG is referring to while bringing out the irregularities, it was the Congress government headed by Tarun Gogoi that was in power in Assam.

Assam Congress president Ripun Bora may have found himself in a spot after the facts have come to light but Tarun Gogoi, the former Chief Minister, was unfazed and virtually admitted that such excess expenditure may have taken place.
