Rhino census begins in Kaziranga National Park

The Rhino census for this year has begun today at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. The two day census will be carried out in different parts of the National Park during which the park will remain closed for tourists during the census.

The Assam’s forest department officials conduct a Rhino census in the Kaziranga National park every three years in order to keep a check on the number of rhinos .

The first part of the census was conducted at Kohora, Bagori and Burhapahar areas of the Kaziranga National Park. The second part of the census will be carried out on Tuesday at Augoratoli.

For the current rhino census, the National Park spread across 430 sq km, has been divided into 74 compartments while 150 forest officials and 36 elephants have been put into service.

The final figure of rhinos post the census will be revealed on Wednesday, the 28th of March, in the presence of an observation committee comprising of journalists and veterinary experts and forest department officials.

Meanwhile, earlier this month a census was carried out in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary which revealed that the number of one horn rhinos had gone up.
