Bringing glory to the Northeast, Nagaland has found its place in the top most birding destinations in the world. Notably, the National Geographic has featured Nagaland among the top 10 best birding destinations in the world, owing to the annual Amur Falcons stop-over.

The roosting site in Nagaland is the Doyang reservoir where hundreds of thousands of Amur Falcon is known to congregate every year. In fact, the National Geographic puts forth that during its peak in October, the stop-over may hold the world’s largest concentration of these migratory birds.

As a matter of fact, the Amur Falcons arrive in Nagaland from Siberia on a yearly basis every October, en route their final destination — Somalia, Kenya and South Africa. The Amur Falcons are known to have one of the longest migration routes of all birds, going up to 22,000 kilometers in a year.

It may also be mentioned here that the Government of Nagaland earlier tagged the Amur Falcon as a state guest in a bid to protect it from hunting, in line with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
