In a very shocking incident, Jonathane N Sangma, an NCP candidate from Meghalaya’s Williamnagar in East Garo Hills was assassinated along with three others in an IED blast at Samanda in Garo Hills around 7.50 pm on Sunday.

The NCP candidate was reportedly returning from a campaign meeting with his PSOs and supporters when suspected GNLA militants triggered an IED blast.

Sangma was reportedly warned by the GNLA not to contest the polls. Three others, including two of his PSOs, have also reportedly been killed in the attack.

Three more including the driver of the Scorpio in which Jonathone, his PSOs and a supporter were travelling were seriously injured in the attack and is learnt to have been brought to Guwahati for better treatment.

Meanwhile, shops and businesses in the area have been closed following the assassination of Jonathon Sangma. Thousands of people also assembled outside the Civil Hospital where an inquest on the body will be carried out. Party leaders and supporters have gathered outside the hospital in large numbers waiting to take the body of their beloved leader.
