In a rather horrific incident,  a group of poachers brutally killed an elephant in the protected forest areas of Bihali in Assam’s Biswanath district.

The miscreants killed the elephant and chopped off its tusks, nails and a portions of its trunk and tail. The incident happened about a kilometer away from the local Wildlife Surveillance Camp at Naharjan.

Meanwhile, authorities are blaming the incident on suspected miscreants who occasionally cross the border into Assam’s jungles from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. There have been reportedly several incidents before this where poachers from Arunachal have targeted elephants for their meat and body parts. The local forest authorities were informed about the incident from the local people.
